They have posted bail and been released from jail. But just because discharge from police custody is free does not mean that you can do what you want while waiting for your court date. You don’t have to walk and hide in your house on eggshells, but you do have to make sure you do not violate any of the terms of your release. If you had a job before your arrest and your employer is willing to take you back to work, you can return to work. Even if you cannot find a job, you can still find and maintain a job. Just live your life as an exemplary citizen and you will be fine.

You can travel within your state while you are free on bail. The court does not impose restrictions on interstate travel, so you can travel outside your state. However, international travel is never permitted.

Pursue your hobbies and interests. While you are free on bail, it is a good idea to pursue healthy, legal hobbies or interests. Spend some time finding and doing things that you enjoy, so that you can replace unproductive, self-destructing habits with healthy ones.

You can’t do that while you’re free on bail. As we have already mentioned, if you are released on bail, you cannot violate any of the conditions of your release.

You cannot miss your court dates while you are free on bail. If you miss a single appearance, the court will consider your bail forfeited. The judge will issue an arrest warrant against you without bail and you will lose your money. Once you stand trial and your bail is deemed forfeited, you will be taken into police custody.

If you are at peace with the law, ask about possible problems. Depending on the terms of your bail, you may or may not possess a weapon. Judges do not prohibit the possession of a gun, but most lawyers advise against possessing or carrying a firearm while on bail. It is in your best interest to refrain from using alcohol or drugs while on bail. This is especially true when one is prone to questionable activities under the influence of alcohol. It is not uncommon for courts to conduct random drug tests of people on bail, so you may need to take a drug test before going to court.
